Embroidery Stitch Types Explained: Satin, Fill, and Running Stitch

Every machine embroidery design ever made is built from three stitch types: satin, fill (tatami), and running stitch. Understanding them helps you read a design preview, diagnose problems, and know what to expect from digitizing.

Satin stitch

Satin is the glossy one. The needle zigzags back and forth across a narrow shape, laying thread side by side so it catches the light. Satin is used for borders, lettering, outlines, and any narrow element up to about 7–10mm wide.

Why the width limit? Long satin stitches snag and loop. Good digitizing splits wide satin areas into multiple columns or converts them to fill. When you see crisp raised lettering or a shiny merrowed patch border, that's satin.

Fill stitch (tatami)

Fill covers large areas with rows of running stitches that alternate direction, creating a woven, brick-like texture. It's how you embroider anything bigger than a centimeter — backgrounds, large shapes, and photo-style shading.

Fill stitch direction changes how light hits the thread, which is how shading works in embroidery. Skilled digitizing varies the angle between regions to create depth — this is the technique behind the directional, almost painterly look in well-digitized photo designs.

Running stitch

A single line of stitches — the simplest type. Used for fine details, outlines, travel paths under other stitching, and sketch-style designs. Running stitch uses very little thread and sews fast, but it's too delicate for areas that need coverage.

How they work together in one design

A typical patch design uses all three: running stitches for fine detail, fill for the large color regions, and satin for the border and key outlines. Reading problems in a sew-out

  • Gaps between regions: pull compensation too low or fabric shifting — check stabilizer
  • Thread loops on top: tension issue, not a digitizing issue
  • Puckering around fills: density too high for the fabric or no cutaway stabilizer
  • Broken threads in satin: column too narrow or needle too small for the thread
