What Is a DST File? The Embroidery Format Explained
If you've spent any time around embroidery machines, you've seen .DST files everywhere. DST (Data Stitch Tajima) was created by Tajima, one of the oldest commercial embroidery machine manufacturers, and it became the de facto industry standard. Nearly every embroidery machine and every piece of embroidery software on the planet can read it.
What's actually inside a DST file
A DST file is a binary list of stitch commands. Each command is 3 bytes and encodes an X/Y needle movement plus a flag: normal stitch, jump (move without stitching), trim, or color change (stop). That's it — there's no thread color information, no thumbnail, no design name.
This is why DST files show up on your machine with generic colors or no colors at all. The file says "stop here for a color change" but doesn't say which color. You assign threads at the machine using the preview or worksheet from your digitizer as a reference.
DST vs. machine-native formats
Home machine brands have their own formats — Brother/Babylock use PES, Janome uses JEF, Husqvarna Viking uses HUS and VP3, Melco uses EXP. These formats store extra data DST lacks, most importantly actual thread colors and hoop information.
The practical rule: DST always works, but a native format gives you colors pre-assigned. If your digitizer only gives you DST, that's fine — just note the color sequence from the preview before you start sewing.

You get DST files from digitizing — either from software (Wilcom, Hatch, Ink/Stitch), from a digitizing service, or from an online converter. Can you edit a DST file?
Not easily. Because DST contains only coordinates, editing software has to guess where one object ends and another begins. Minor resizing (±10%) is usually safe, but for real edits you want the original working file or a fresh digitization from the source artwork — which is another reason generating from the image directly is the cleanest workflow.
