What each format actually stores
DST is the universal Tajima format. It contains only stitches, jumps, trims, and color-change stops. It does not store thread colors, so your machine shows a generic sequence and you assign threads manually using the preview as a reference. That's why DST works everywhere — there's almost nothing in it that can break.
PES is Brother/Babylock's native format. It stores the same stitch data plus actual thread colors, design thumbnails, and hoop information. JEF is Janome's native format. Like PES, it carries color and hoop metadata, but it is not interchangeable with PES. If you have a Janome machine, JEF is the cleanest import; DST still sews fine if that's what you have.
HUS, VP3, and EXP are the native formats for Husqvarna Viking/Pfaff and Melco respectively. They work the same way: brand-specific containers with color metadata on top of the same stitch coordinates.
